Salary: 7,000 - 7,000

Job Summary

Equal Justice Works is the nation’s largest facilitator of Fellowships in public interest law. In the Equal Justice Works Housing Justice Program, lawyers, organizers, and law students work together to advance tenants’ rights and hold bad-actor landlords accountable through direct legal services, education and outreach, impact litigation, and policy advocacy.

The Summer Law Student fellow will assist the Charleston Office address housing instability for SCLS clients in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, and Jasper counties. SCLS clients are those individuals with incomes of less that 125% of the federal poverty line. The Fellow will learn how SCLS housing cases operate from intake to trial and will be responsible for tasks assigned by the managing attorney for the Charleston office or the attorney overseeing a case. Tasks can include things such as applicant intake, case investigation, interviewing potential witnesses, and trial preparation or settlement negotiation under the supervision of the attorney assigned to the case. Courtroom observation opportunities will be available. The Fellow may also be asked to assist SCLS with reviewing its websites to ensure the accuracy of legal content hosted on or linked from them.
